Biography

Espen Myklebust Olsen is a Norwegian organist and conductor currently residing in Stockholm. Espen currently works as a church musician in Västermalm and German St. Gertruds congregations, where he iamongst other tasks also conducts Essinge Chamber Choir as well as the brass ensemble “Bläserey”. Besides this, Espen is also active as a freelance musician and conductor.

Espen studied church music at the Norwegian Academy of Music in Oslo, organ performance at the Royal Danish Academy of Music in Copenhagen and conducting at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm. His most influential teachers have been Jon Laukvik and Hans Davidsson in organ performance, as well as Grete Pedersen and Fredrik Malmberg in conducting.

As an organist Espen has already gained vast experience in several areas. He frequently performs as an accompanist on the organ and the piano, and as a chamber musician and continuo player on the harpsichord. He regularly plays organ concerts and has appeared as soloist with orchestras on many occasions.

As a conductor Espen works with choirs and orchestras on all levels. Besides his regular ensembles he has also worked with The Trondheim Soloists, Sundbyberg Symphony Orchestra, Lidingö Sinfonia, Stuvsta Strings, Nicolai Chamber Choir, Västerås Cathedral Motet Choir and Vokal Nord, as well as projects for the Association for Children- and Youth Choirs in Church, the Norwegian Choir Association and the Norwegian Academy of Music.

Espen teach the organ, conducting and occasionally singing privately. Shorter teaching engagements has included Bodø International Organ Festivals Youth Course, Bodø Culture Academy and Bodø College.

Espen has performed in festivals like Bodø International Organ Festival, Oslo International Church Music Festival Gentofte Baroque Days, Amager Music Festival and Stockholm Early Music Festival. His work has led to several prices and awards, such as the fist price in the Fridthjov Anderssen Organ Competition for Youths, the Janson Scholarship, Amager Talent Award, the Sandrews Foundation, the Royal Academy of Musics award for dilligent students and the Royal Swedish Academy of Musics National Scholarship.
